Tips for rescheduling an interview

  • Only reschedule your interview if  you absolutely have to. It is likely to cause some inconvenience to the interviewer and should be avoided if possible. Rescheduling can come across as unprofessional so try and rearrange your other plans if you can.
  • However if you are unwell it is preferable to reschedule than to try and get through an interview feeling sick and and performing poorly. Rescheduling due to unanticipated work obligations is acceptable as it indicates to the interviewer that you are a dedicated employee. Genuine family emergencies are a valid reason for rescheduling.
  • Keep it short and do not go into specifics. " I apologize for the inconvenience but an emergency has come up and I am unable to make our interview. I am very interested in the position and would be grateful if we could reschedule the interview."
  • Give as much notice as possible
  • If you have to cancel at short notice it is better to call the interviewer directly and follow up with an email. Never send a text message as this is unprofessional.
