Behavioral Interview Tips for Success

  • Focus on examples that clearly demonstrate the required behavior. If the behavioral question asks you to describe a time you had to solve a problem do not frustrate the interviewer with examples that are not relevant and do not clearly and completely show this ability.
  • Problem solving includes coming up with alternative courses of actions after considering the information and resources you have, deciding on the best course of action to take and committing to it. Your behavioral answer should include all these key actions in order to effectively demonstrate your problem solving ability.
  • Avoid going into too much background detail. You will lose the interviewer's interest. Establish the context of your actions briefly but clearly.
  • The example you provide should center around your actions and your contribution. A behavioral example in which you play a minor or supporting role does not give the interviewer the evidence they want. Your answer should use the words "I", "me" and "my" rather than we", "us" and "they".
