The Job Reference Letter

Know how to get the job reference letter you want.

You have decided on the people you would like to serve as references during your job search.

It is important ask their permission to put their names forward as a reference so they are not taken by surprise when they are contacted by a potential employer. It is both polite and professional to ask if they are prepared to act as your references.

You may want to do this formally by writing a letter requesting their permission.

Dear Mr Reference

I am currently involved in searching for a new position and would appreciate your help. I would like to include you in my list of references as someone who has a good knowledge of my skills and abilities.

If you are willing to act as one of my references I will include your name, title and contact details on my reference list and I will keep you updated about possible contact from a potential employer.

Please let me know if you are comfortable with this request and if there is any information I can provide in connection with this.

Sincerely,

John Candidate

You could also send an e-mail requesting permission along the lines of:

"Dear Susan

I am applying for a new position and would like to include you as a reference. Having worked together for some time I regard you as someone who has a good knowledge of my work abilities and performance and who will provide a valid reference.

Please let me know if you are comfortable with this request.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

Jane Candidate"

Generally employers prefer to contact a reference directly to get information on the candidate, however it is a good idea to have a couple of written letters of recommendation available.

You can keep these in a portfolio to present at your interview. You can also include them in your resume.
